If you are a beginner, you may be unsure of what to wear to a Muay Thai class. Although professional male athletes are often shirtless and wear shorts in the ring, there are no hard rules on what you must wear to your class. If you are attending a class for the first-time dress comfortably. There is no need to splurge on clothing while you are just in the learning stages. Dress as if you were going to the gym in either shorts, comfortable pants, and a t-shirt. Muay Thai is an intense workout and you are sure to burn a lot of calories. You will want to be cool and comfortable for your class.

Is a Uniform Required?

Unlike martial arts such as Taekwondo and Karate, Muay Thai does not have a formal uniform that is worn during training session. Competitors may have more elaborate shorts and tops to wear during competition, but on a day to day basis they will likely wear clothing that is designed for comfort during high intensity training.

When you are just starting out with a new martial art, is a good idea to keep it simple. Don’t go over the top with clothing for competitions if you aren’t yet sure that you will compete. It is also a good idea to consider hearing from other athletes about what they choose to wear.

Do I need equipment?

You may have come across picture of Muay Thai fighters wearing gloves or hand and foot wraps. Though there is equipment used in Muay Thai it will likely not be necessary for you to obtain your own equipment for your first few classes. Many gyms will have spare equipment available to be used by beginners.

It is a good idea to take it slow with purchasing equipment for Muay Thai or any other martial art. Consult with others in your gym to get an understanding of what you will need and when you will need it for. If you are planning on competing you will eventually need to purchase some personal equipment. Many athletes prefer to have their own equipment for comfort and sanitary reasons.

Remember that while you are in the learning stages you will most likely spend the bulk of your training time not wearing equipment. Much of what you will learn in a Muay Thai class can be done with your body alone.

Check With Your Gym

In most cases, regular gym clothing will be acceptable for you to wear to a Muay Thai class. It is always a good idea to check with your gym to ensure you are following any dress codes they have it place. They should also be able to provide you with suggestions on what to wear for your first class.
